Since I live in Bled, one of the most touristic places in my country, I decided to write a little guide for all of you thinking about traveling here. When I travel I always want to hear recommendations from locals, because they know all the secret spots, so I hope with this post I can help you discover only the best of Bled. If you are not thinking of Bled as one of your travel destinations, I highly recommend you to start, because not just Bled, but also Slovenia has so much to offer. I feel like this is gonna be a long post, but I’ll try to give you the best Local’s guide to Bled ever!
TOP 3 BLED SIGHTS YOU CAN’T MISS
Bled Lake and Island – The main attraction and the most known symbol of Bled. The view on the lake is gorgeous from everywhere, and a walk around will take you about an hour. You MUST visit the Bled Island, ring the wish bell and enjoy the famous Slovenian dessert Potica while there.
Vintgar gorge– An amazing art of nature. Vintgar gorge is a breathtaking and refreshing experience. It’s located a few kilometers from Bled, but it’s really worth the short drive there.
Bled Castle– Much more than a pretty view. Sure the view from the castle is amazing, but there is so much more to do there. You can visit the museum, vine cellar or printing works house and if you are lucky you will catch medieval programme.
PLETNA OR RENT A BOAT?
I could say hanging out on Island is one of my favourite summer activities, and you really should visit it when in Bled! There are different options on how to go there, but my favourite for sure is rowing with rented boat. You can rent it on different spots around the lake and it costs about 20EUR per hour. You can make a fun trip and after you finish with sightseeing on Island you can just freely cruise on the lake. BEST THING EVER! The other option is probably the most popular among tourists and it’s going there with traditional Pletna boat. Also great option, and perfect fit for the lazy ones or the ones who can’t row by themselve for different reasons. It costs about 12EUR per person and they give you half hour to visit Island (more than enough in my opinion).
WHERE TO EAT?
⇢GRAJSKA PLAŽA– My all time favourite. I could eat here everyday! The location is perfect and food is just awesome.
⇢PEGLEZN – Cozy place, great food and waiting lines if you come at peak hours! Make a reservation before you go.
⇢BERC – Fine food Berc is in a bit higher price range, but worth every Euro! Cozy garden atmosphere and delicious food!
⇢SOVA – People love their main courses, but I go there mostly for the dessert! Yuum!
WHERE TO GET THE BEST KREMŠNITA & ICE CREAM?
You must try the famous Cream Cake and many guides will advise you to eat it in Kavarna Park, which is the home of Cream Cake. The Cream Cake is good, but the staff can be rude, which is a big minus for me. A hidden spot you can really enjoy is roof top terrace of Hotel Park just across the street, with the same cake and even better view! Some Cream Cakes in other Cafes come from the same confectionary as the ones from Kavarna Park and all the others are equally delicious if not even better. But Kavarna Park is not all that bad and has one thing that I’m obsessed with, and that is the best Ice Cream ever! You can get it in their Kiosk next to Casino on the promenade, and thank me for the tip later!
WHERE TO SWIM IN THE LAKE?
If you come in the high season with high temperatures a perfect way to cool off is to take a swim in the lake. There are two free beaches I would recommend and one paying one. Mlino and Zaka are free, and you can even rent a sun lounger and umbrella in Zaka. If you don’t mind paying for the beach Grajska Plaža in the one for you. (I marked all of the spots in the map at the end of the post!)
FOR THE ADVENTOROUS
Bled and the nearby places have a lot to offer to those addicted to adrenaline! You can go Canyoning and I promise you’ll have the best time ever. I went once and it was such a cool experience. There are some photos and even a funny video of it, but I’ll keep this for my personal archive haha! If you are searching for something more relaxed but still want a refreshing adrenaline experience try rafting on Sava Dolinka. For the best Canyoning and Rafting check out Outdoor Slovenia.
Another fun option for a half day trip is to take a Zipline over Sava Dolinka. You’ll see gorgeous valley from above and experience flying on 5 cables over the river. Must do while in Bled!
If you are here on family vacations, be sure to visit Straža where you can try summer sledging, adventure park and some other cool activities.
FREE WALKING TOUR BLED
I might be a bit biased on this one because this is a project that my father runs, but Bled Free tour is something you really need to attend if you want to find out interesting stories and facts about Bled. It is completely free and you can attend it every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 18:00. It’s a 1,5h walk where you can also ask for directions and cool tips! You can find the meeting point marked on the link to the map below.
BEST VIEW POINTS
If I got 1EUR for every time someone asked me where is the famous viewpoint in Bled, I’ll probably be pretty rich by now. The most famous one with the bench is called Ojstrica and you can take a 10 min hike from Camp Zaka to reach it. Next to it is Osojnica which is a bit less famous but also offers a lovely view. The other two cool views are from Straža (you can also go with cabl car) and castle.
HOW LONG TO STAY?
If your trip includes lot’s of chilling by the lake and activities you can easily stay for the whole week. But if you are in the rush and you just want to see the important stuff, I would say three days is enough. Bled is a great starting point for some cool hikes and for visiting nearby places such as Kranjska Gora, Bohinj, Radovljica and even Ljubljana, so if you can I would recommend to stay longer.
HOW TO GET AROUND?
Most of the stuff are within walking distance, but the other cool option is renting a bike. If you arrive in Bled with car for a day trip the best option is to park the car by Hotel Rikli Balance where you can leave it for the full day and walk from there. The traffic gets pretty crazy in summer, so try not to have a mental breakdown.
